Zidane will long be known as the only player ever to be sent off during extra time in a World Cup finals match. In that 2006 match Zidane scored in the 7th minute on a penalty shot to become the the 4th player in World Cup history to score in two different finals matches. He also tied the record for the most goals scored in World Cup finals matches altogether.

Unfortunately in the 110th minute with the match tied 1-1 against Italy, Zidane sends his head through the chest of Marco Materazzi (another notoriously dirty player) and gets the red card. Italy won the game in penalty shots 5-3. Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball for MVP of the tournament. Unbelievable.
